Nepal Internet
Users Group (NIUG) started in 1997 as a group of people interested
in the use of the Internet and e-mail in Nepal. This informal group
was primarily established to share new ideas, difficulties and information
regarding the Internet. Members met on a regular basis to share their
knowledge and organized training programs with the purpose of encouraging
newcomers and popularizing the Internet Technologies.
In April 1998, the group outgrew the old informal setup and was registered
as a membership based nonprofit, Non Governmental Organization (NGO).
In effect, it became the first and only Information and Computer
Technology (ICT) - oriented NGO operating in Nepal, focused on
development and provision of ICT supported social services.
NIUG is a forum
where members, both individual and organizational, come together to
discuss/share their expertise and experiences and contribute online
information . Members within NIUG have access to resources to develop
skills through in-house training and broadly through NIUG member's
resources. Members provide information as well as have access to resources
and information through projects and programs coordinated by NIUG.
As an independent
organization., NIUG also seeks to be a ' voice' for members,
by ' informing and educating the public', and representing
the concerns of members to relevant parties, including private sector
ISPs and Government bodies.
"INDRENI"
a free Intranet service, a pioneer in the country, was set up by NIUG
in 1998. The objective of the service was broadly in line with NIUG's
mission to share and make available on line information at minimum
cost. NIUG's pioneer service offers a low-cost alternative to the
Internet and has the potential to reach the masses. The objective
of the INDRENI service is to work global and dial local.
NIUG also coordinates and facilitates NepalNet,
a development oriented network of organizations and institutions working
in Nepal. NepalNet has in its network, members who are focused on
Nepal's socioeconomic development.
NepalNet originated from the 1997 International Canter for Integrated
Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
project called 'Electronic Networking for Sustainable Mountain
Development in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas'. It's focus is on sustainable
development and is open to all the stakeholders in sustainable development.
The NepalNet network is young but has a tremendous potential for growth
in incorporating development focused Nepalese organizations.
