NIUG signs an agreement with ICIMOD for NepalNet Project

The Nepal Internet Users’ Group (NIUG) signed an agreement with the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), to facilitate research through promoting networking amongst institutions in Nepal by providing an electronic forum to disseminate information. The agreement between NIUG and ICIMOD will help establish linkages between these specialists and information seekers on various subjects they are interested in.

This generous assistance from International Development Research Center (IDRC), Canada, is indeed opportune in that it comes at a time when access to such information is receiving increasing attention of the Nepalese public.

Indreni- the Nepali Intranet, with a prior support from the Electronic Networking Project, established that disseminating information in a developing country like Nepal, is extremely vital to avoid wasting scarce resources and to make the best use of what is available without duplicating efforts to amass published materials.

Indreni aims towards easy and quicker access to sharing and providing information produced by Government Institutions and other development agencies to promote Internet awareness for national development. Indreni will offer a space for knowledge sharing on an Intranet / Internet level to information-seeking groups. It will include additional features as an online databases of latest documents on research, access to information of development organisations through websites, content in Nepali language, and e-commerce.

The web site will be mirrored on INDRENI-the Nepali Intranet and can be accessed at www.indreni.net.np/nepalnet by dialing 247 168. Dial-up support is available at 258 299. With the help of ICIMOD and NepalNet partners, Indreni aims to enhance NepalNet which will serve as a central point of reference for online discussions about development topics on Nepal and further promote Internet-related technologies in other districts.
